Financing an Improved Water and wastewater Services Program (IWSP) in four governorates in the Nile Delta region (Damietta, Sharqeyah, Gharbeya et Beheira)

Global improvement of water and wastewater services in the Delta, to reduce surface water pollution and sanitary risks for the population

Project’s specific objectives
 
>>> Improving the quantity and quality of water and wastewater services in four governorates in the Delta,
 through an investment program focusing on the most urgent needs ;

>>> Consolidating the reform of the sector, in particular by reinforcing the investment programming capacities and strategic management of the HCWW ;

>>> Improving the capacity of the four water companies to plan and implement their investment program and to improve their  technical and financial performancs, in order to cover their operating and maintenance costs ;

>>> Achieving better aid effectiveness through a joint initiative of four European development partners.
 
Content of the Project


- Investment component (273 M€) : rehabilitation of networks and of potable water and wastewater plants, construction of new plants, mainly for wastewater treatment.

-Technical assistance component (22 M€) : reinforcement of the technical capacities and management skills of the four water companies involved in the Project, and of the HCWW.

Project duration

4 years (2009-2012)

Impact
 
• Improvement of the potable water service quality delivered to the four governorates population;

• Improvement of the health condition of the population;

• Reduction of surface and underground water pollution in the four concerned governorates;

• Ensuring the sustainability of the intensive local agricultural activities;

• Improvement of the performance of the 4 affiliated companies and consolidation of the sector reform.
