AFD Group activity in Ghana

AFD Group has had a mandate to operate in Ghana since 1985. Project supervision is managed by the Accra agency which was the first to open in an English-speaking country.
AFD’s activity in Ghana, in consultation with its Ghanaian partners, is today based on three core areas:
- Equitable access to basic services and infrastructure for populations;
Access to drinking water is core to this objective with, in particular, a village water project in the Brong-Ahafo region. Various actions implemented in the urban development (integrated development programs) and energy sectors are also contributing.
- Increasing and securing agricultural income;
AFD combats poverty in rural areas by supporting the structuring of industries, improving operating systems and building the capacities of producers (rubber, oil palm and perennial plantations, particularly rice). Its actions also involve improving social, environmental and productive infrastructure.
- Improving production factors via infrastructure, particularly urban infrastructure;
The rapid development of Ghana’s cities is a major issue. AFD aims to contribute to the development of urban centers by its continued support for the decentralization process initiated by the government and for the definition of a real national urban development policy.
It is also worth noting that AFD actively contributes to the various multi-donor working groups in Ghana which is a reference in terms of aid harmonization. After having led several sectoral groups and co-chaired the groups in 2006-2007, in 2008 it began working on concerted natural resource management.
