An AFD €50 million loan to the Government of Egypt will finance the Gabal El Asfar Wastewater Treatment Plant extension. This project will improve the treatment of wastewater from the East Bank of Cairo, by increasing the plant capacity by 500,000 m3/day. This environmental project, whose main objective is pollution abatement in the Delta and the Mediterranean, is part of the Horizon 2020 Initiative of the Union for the Mediterranean. The project will also contribute to a better environment for the rural population of the Delta, by reducing the sources of water-born diseases. The project executing agency is the Construction Authority for Potable Water and Wastewater (CAPW), under the Ministry of Housing, Utilities and Urban Development, who will contract a private international company for construction and operation. The project is co-financed by the African Development Bank for an amount of €53.3 million. << More about this Project

An AFD €44 million loan to the Government of Egypt will finance the construction of the Phase 2 of Cairo Metro line 3. Greater Cairo, who has to face urban transport planning issues, has engaged in the construction of a third metro line and in the development of mass transit infrastructure, to reduce progressively the use of individual cars. This third line, mainly underground, is already under construction with a 4.2 km first phase including 5 stations. The project includes the 7.12 km second phase with 4 new stations. It will be co-financed by a €200 million loan of the French Ministry of Finance. In addition, a €1 million grant from the French Global Environment Fund, as a contribution to sustainable urban transport and to climate change abatement, will assist the Egyptian Authorities in the implementation of a new urban transport strategy. << More about this Project
